Pieter Levels — Nomad List, RemoteOK, PhotoAI

Verified public revenue, products, and source posts — what 20 solopreneurs and near-solo founders are actually doing for their seven-figure year.
"Solo founder making real money" used to be a Hacker News rumour. In 2026 it's a documented and growing market segment. Below are 20 cases where the founder publicly disclosed seven-figure revenue, with the source post linked. Where the founder runs with a tiny team or contractor network instead of pure solo, we flag it explicitly so you can read it honestly.
Inclusion required two things: (1) the business is solo-led, near-solo (founder + ≤2 part-time helpers), or was solo at the milestone we're citing; and (2) revenue is publicly disclosed by the founder on a citable URL — newsletter, blog, X post, podcast appearance, or independent reporting. Where revenue is run-rate or lifetime rather than current ARR, we say so. Cases we couldn't verify cleanly were dropped. Where the founder works with contractors or has since hired, the card is flagged.

Cohorts ("The LinkedIn Operating System", "Creator MBA"), newsletter sponsorships, and digital products — all solo. Justin runs the entire stack with a part-time virtual assistant. Sells: digital courses + newsletter sponsorships.
Notion template designer. Flagship template "Second Brain" alone generates >$100K. ARR run rate likely crossed $1M in 2025; included here as a comparator and as the cleanest digital-product solo case in this segment. Sells: Notion templates, digital products.
Built Small Bets to ~$400K+/yr at exit, then sold to Gumroad. Documented his $1M cumulative milestone publicly. Sells: community + courses.
Operated Gumroad with effectively 1 FTE plus a global contractor network. Now $20M+/yr. Worth including specifically because it's the proof that the contractor-network model can scale past $10M solo-led. Sells: creator commerce platform.
Starter Story is a SEO-driven founder-interview library + premium DB membership, started solo in 2017. Sells: founder interviews + paid community/database.
HeadshotPro hit $100K ARR in 14 days from solo launch. Sells: AI headshot generator.

Plausible is privacy-first analytics. Started by Uku as a solo project in 2018; Marko joined as co-founder; now 8-person team. Including here as the cleanest "open-source bootstrapped indie SaaS" benchmark — 12,000+ paying subscribers. Sells: privacy-first analytics.

A browser game with sponsor placements; hit $87K MRR at peak in March 2025. Currently the fastest documented $0-to-$1M-ARR a solo founder has shipped — also a useful upper bound on what is now possible when AI tooling collapses time-to-launch. Sells: browser game with sponsor placements.
Interior AI runs at >99% gross margin — $300/mo of hosting against $43K/mo of revenue. Listed separately because the unit economics are the cleanest illustration of "AI thin-wrapper as a real solo business" we've seen. Counts toward Levels' combined portfolio number above. Sells: AI room redesign.
Edits Trends, owned by HubSpot/Hustle (so not pure solo for the newsletter); but as a solo operator she also sold her ebook "Doing Content Right" ~3,200 × $100 — a clean solo info-product number. Use as influence/inspiration rather than a strict solo-revenue case.
Building Podscan in public with transparent MRR sharing. Documented his prior FeedbackPanda exit. Listed as a "solo founder to watch" rather than a current $1M+ case. Sells: podcast intelligence / search SaaS.
Bucketing the 13 cleanly-verified solo $1M+ cases (excluding tiny-team and comparator entries):
| Category | Count | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| AI-powered SaaS / API | 5 | PhotoAI, Interior AI, TypingMind, HeadshotPro, Bannerbear |
| Creator/info products + cohorts | 3 | Justin Welsh, Daniel Vassallo, Pat Walls |
| Marketplaces / job boards | 2 | RemoteOK, Nomad List |
| Boilerplate / dev micro-SaaS | 1 | Marc Lou (ShipFast portfolio) |
| Vertical SaaS | 1 | Testimonial.to |
| Browser game | 1 | fly.pieter.com |
The biggest cluster is AI-powered SaaS — five of thirteen. Distribution skill (creator/info) and marketplaces follow. Boilerplate-style dev tools punch above their headcount: a single product (ShipFast) carried Marc Lou to a $1M+ year.
The range is enormous: from 17 days (Pieter Levels' fly.pieter.com) and ~4 months (Maor Shlomo's Base44) at one end, to 4–7 years (Plausible, Justin Welsh, Pat Walls, Bannerbear) at the other.
